If you know, you know is a screening of experimental film, video, animation and artists’ moving image made in Scotland between 1970 and 2020, commissioned and presented online as part of Alchemy Film & Arts’ Continue Watching digital programme.

This programme brings together seven works from disparate places, production contexts and moments in history to consider the systems and practices within a community which shapes its understanding of who and what constitutes the insider. With a critical relationship to the cinematic mythologies of whiteness, provincialism, romantic wilderness and industrial grit, these works offer a more complex and contradictory impression of moving image from Scotland.

The live launch of this screening on 18 February 2021 will be followed by an hour-long roundtable discussion addressing the historic and contemporary infrastructural contexts for experimental filmmaking and artists’ moving image practice in Scotland. Speakers include: Marcus Jack, Kitty Anderson, Moira Jeffrey and Michael Pattison.

To coincide with this screening, Alchemy is supporting the publication of “Jugalbandi” by Jasleen Kaur and Alia Syed, the third chapbook from DOWSER, our series of newly commissioned essays, interview transcripts and archival materials which makes available, for the first time, a collated set of resources from which we might begin to plot a history of artists’ moving image in Scotland.

Continue Watching is a new virtual programme taking place between October 2020 and April 2021 that includes film screenings, guest-curated shorts programmes, commissioned essays, artist Q&As, a digital symposium and a new book publication.

If you know, you know is curated by Marcus Jack, director of Transit Arts.
